Denied Boarding for Cruise Ship

Hello Reader,

A funny thing happened to me on my last cruise. Short story is they found a bullet in my backpack.

I have travelled with my work backpack in the past and had no problems making it through security. Recently I put that keychain above in my backpack for the office and totally forgot to remove it for the cruise.

At the terminal I am in line and my backpack enters the machine. The security agent stops the machine and looks at me. She repositions my backpack and scans it again. All I get from her is dirty looks. Then I realize what she is seeing. My heart sinks as I realize that I may be denied boarding. At this point I am THAT guy, the one that stops the boarding process for many in line behind me. The supervisor was called over and I was taken to more private area and asked to show him the device. I removed the bullet from the keychain and was allowed to board.

I was told to retrieve my item after the cruise on a table outside the terminal. I did remember to go get my keychain. I saw all the items that had been confiscated for this cruise. Knives, hand steamers, other bullet keychains, a kids toy gun, and many other items.

All cruise companies post a list of prohibited items on their website. Here is a pretty standard list from Royal Caribbean's website.

  • Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas.
  • Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.)
  • Illegal Drugs & Substances
  • CBD Oil / CBD Products
  • Candles, Incense, Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, Travel Steamers & Hot Plates. (Items that generate heat or produce an open flame. This includes heating pads, clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense, and any other item that may create a fire hazard. NOTE: The only exception to this policy is curling irons and hair straighteners. Matches and normal lighteners are allowed onboard. However, "torch lighters" and novelty lighters that look like guns are not allowed onboard. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame, and therefore are prohibited.
  • Hoverboards
  • Martial Arts, Self Defense, and Sports Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks.
  • Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks.
  • Hookahs & Water Hookah Pipes
  • HAM Radios
  • Electrical Extension Cords, including power strips/surge protected strips
  • Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint.
  • Perishable Food & Meat Products
  • Alcoholic Beverages (beer, seltzer or hard liquor) seized on embarkation day will not be returned.

I would tell you to not follow my example, check everything before travelling. I was lucky that the security agent was understanding.
